Entertaining Angels.

It was a beautiful day, the sun was shining, the sky was blue,
there wasn't a cloud to be seen but, it was bitterly cold on that
January morning and I was warmly wrapped up in my coat, scarf, gloves
and hat as I walked to my favourite computor store.

The store was on a side street just off a bustling main road with houses, shops and many folks going about their daily business.

I was walking along enjoying the winter sunshine when a chap suddenly appeared in front of me as if from no-where.
I didn't see him crossing the road and coming towards me, niether did I spot him walking along the pavement towards me. He just seemed to appear.
Before I knew it he was almost in front of me with his hand out-stretched as if he was asking for help.
He was clean shaven, neat and tidy, but the striking thing I immediately noticed was that despite it being so bitterly cold and the temperature at almost freezing point, he was only wearing a suit jacket with open neck shirt. No jersey, no cardigan, no scarf or hat to keep him warm.
Just his trousers, open neck shirt and his jacket.

Before I had time to respond by asking him if there was anything wrong, he asked me, still with his outstretched arm, if I could spare him a few pennies, adding that he was going to tell me the truth
about what the money was for.

Looking me straight in the eye he said, I'm not going to lie to you. The truth is he continued, the money is not for a cup of warm tea, no, it's for a couple of cans of beer. Tell me to go away if you want, but please give me some of your spare change.

I told him I had loose change in both my coat pockets and said choose the left or right pocket. He chose the left one, so I scooped up the loose change into my hand and offered it to him. I've no idea how much gave I him but it was probably just a couple of pounds.
He thanked me, walked away behind me and I continued my walk. In less than ten seconds I turned round to give him another look but he was gone, he'd disappeared as quickly as he had arrived.
But where too? there were no shops, no alleyways, no houses he could have entered, and he couldn't have reached the main road in such a short time. He'd simply vanished.

Too far fetched to be true? Well I'm not so sure.
It just so happens that I'm an alcoholic, I've been sober 32years and I could easily have given him a talk about the demon drink then sent him packing. I could just as easily have ignored him and walked right passed him, but I didn't, I gave him the money from my pocket.
Was giving that chap money for beer an irresponsible thing to do? Well think on this, God knows I'm a recovering alcoholic and supposing he'd sent an angel to test my attitude of late, would that still have been an irresponsible action? I think not, because I may just have been entertaining an angel that day.
