We stood in a small circle, my wife, my children and me in our lounge and said a special prayer to God asking for protection on the five hundred mile journey we were about to make.
It was going to be a long drive and it would be dark when we would arrive at our destination, but we were happy to make the journey knowing we had God's protection all around us.
So off we went, my wife with the map on her knees in the front of the car beside me, and the three children in the back seat reading or drawing in their crayon books.
Now to cut a long story short, everything was fine and the journey was pretty uneventful.
As we reached the last leg of the journey we all agreed we could be doing with a break and as we were all getting a bit hungry we decided that we should stop at the next convenient eatery we spotted.
However it wasn't going to be just as easy as that, there were no stopping places, no restaurants, no cafes or hotels. But suddenly the kids all shouted at once, there's one dad as they pointed to the right.
Sure enough I could see the cafe sign lit up in the darkness on the opposite side of the road just up ahead of us.
We were by now on a busy stretch of road, it was dark, it was raining and I would rather have found a cafe on our own side of the road but we couldn't be sure we would come across another eating place. However I could see a gap in the traffic so I smartly indicated and crossed over into the car park and we all piled out into the cafe eagerly anticipating our meal we were about to eat.
An hour later after a delicious meal we all climbed back into the car. Whilst sitting there preparing ourselves for the final leg of the journey my wife suggested it wouldn't do any harm in asking God once more for protection, so again I said another prayer requesting His protection. I started the car and moved towards the exit only to discover the road was practically nose to tail with a traffic build up as it was now the rush hour. Once again I was fortunate, for after about five minutes a gap appeared in the traffic on both sides of the road so I took the opportunity, indicated and slipped over into the opposite lane.
By now it was really quite dark and it was raining as we drove along this two way traffic narrow road. We travelled about a mile passing along a line of traffic coming in the opposite lane when suddenly, one of the cars slipped out in an attempt to overtake the cars in his lane. He was now heading towards us, in OUR lane.
I only remember raising my right hand to my forehead in utter shock. I didn't have time to execute a manoeuvre out of his way. I couldn't have anyway because there was no room to move to the left out of his way because there was a hedge and a ditch there, and there was no room for him to pass us. But pass us he did, and there was only enough room for a largish motorcycle to pass between us and the oncoming traffic.
I looked in my rear view mirror and saw his rear lights behind us but still on the wrong side of the road in our lane.
I saw the car, my wife and children were looking back in the direction of his car and they saw him. But none of us saw him passing us, it was as if he went right through us.
So how did he pass us without hitting us and without us seeing him pass? Well for us, a true miracle had just taken place and we will never forget it and we shall be forever and eternally grateful to God for His protection and His miracle.
